There's a great opportunity coming up for anyone interested in finding out more about the LDS church. If you have friends who've seen the church plastered throughout the media and are wondering who the Mormons really are, take them to the BYU Mormon Media Studies Symposium!
This is a free forum where communications professionals and professors to discuss Mormons in the media, as well as The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints’ use of media. Recent happenings in the media to be discussed include, the Church’s “I’m a Mormon” campaign, the power of unorthodox writers such as Joanna Brooks and “The Book of Mormon Musical.”
It's taking place November 8-9, 2012, and sessions will run from morning until evening. All sessions will take place in rooms 2254 and 2258 of the Harmon Building on the BYU campus. The address is: 770 East University Parkway, Provo, UT
The keynote address will be given by Dr. David Campbell of the University of Notre Dame on Thurs, Nov. 8 at 11 a.m. Pete Czerny of the LDS Motion Picture studios will join with others in a documentary presentation and discussion: “A Reel Legacy: Judge Whitaker & The History of the BYU Motion Picture Studio” on Nov. 9 at 4 p.m. so bring your cameras for a great photo op!
Topics that will be included in the BYU Mormon Media Studies Symposium are:
• "Baptism of Fire: A comparative Analysis of Media Coverage of the LDS Church's Practice of Proxy Baptisms"
• "The Book of Mormon Musical: Tap Dancing, Blasphemy, and Truth in Advertising"
• "How Does the Truth Still Prevail? Presidential Politiics, Press Coverage of Religion, and Social Media in the Era of the Mormon Moment"
• "Unstructured Time and Media Use in Families: How LDS Families Spend Their Time with Each Other and with the Media"
• "Mitt Romney and the Media's Shaping of the Mormon Question"
• "Comedy and Mormon Women"
Not only will it be great for anyone you know who wants to know more about the church, but it will also help members of the church know how to answer questions as well as answering questions of their own.
